Cross Border Initiative Project

The ongoing conflict and instability along the Thailand-Myanmar border have resulted in significant humanitarian crises, displacement, and disruption of social cohesion within affected communities, including churches. These crises have exacerbated existing vulnerabilities, hindering the capacity of churches and communities to effectively respond to needs and promote holistic, transformational and sustainable development.

One of the most pressing consequences of the conflict has been the emergence of a humanitarian crisis characterized by food insecurity, lack of access to healthcare and social services. Many people have been forced to flee their homes, leaving behind their livelihoods and sources of income. An estimated 3 million people are internally displaced. As a result, they are struggling to meet their basic needs for food, shelter, education and healthcare. The conflict has also disrupted agricultural production and supply chains, leading to shortages of essential goods and soaring prices.

The conflict has eroded social cohesion and trust within communities, hindering efforts to promote peace and reconciliation. The violence and suffering caused by the conflict have created deep divisions among different groups, making it difficult for them to work together towards a common goal. The breakdown of social trust has made it difficult for churches and communities to respond effectively to crises and rebuild their lives. Protection risks are grave, and greater risks of discrimination, exploitation, abuse, and gender-based violence (GBV), compounded by a breakdown of social structures and support systems as well as limited access to the legal system.

Churches and communities play a vital role in providing support to those affected by the conflict. They offer humanitarian assistance, such as food, shelter, and healthcare, and provide spiritual and emotional support to those in need. However, many churches and communities in the region lack the resources, capacity, and networks to effectively address the complex challenges arising from the conflict.

To address the humanitarian crisis and promote sustainable development in the region, it is essential to address the root causes of the conflict. This includes promoting political dialogue and reconciliation, addressing economic inequalities, and strengthening the rule of law. By addressing these underlying issues, it will be possible to create a more peaceful and stable environment in which communities can thrive.

By addressing these root causes and challenges, the proposed project will contribute to the transformation of churches and communities, enabling them to play a more active role in promoting community resilience and reducing violence in the border areas of Thailand and Myanmar.
